The Cisco Meraki MR74 (PID MR74-HW) was Meraki's workhorse ruggedized outdoor access point for years: a four-radio, IP67-rated, 802.11ac Wave 2 cloud-managed AP built for stadiums, ports, campuses, manufacturing yards, and tactical outdoor coverage. It went End of Sale on May 7, 2021, and reaches its Last Day of Support (LDoS) on July 21, 2026. After that date Cisco's support obligations end entirely. If you still have MR74s mounted on poles, towers, or building exteriors, the window to plan a clean refresh to the Wi-Fi 6 MR76 is now, not next summer.

Why acting before July 21, 2026 matters

End-of-life is not a cliff where the hardware dies, but it is a hard line for risk. After LDoS three things change at once, and all of them land on the operator, not on Cisco.

  • No more firmware or security patches. The MR74 stops receiving Meraki firmware updates, which means any PSIRT-disclosed vulnerability in its 802.11ac driver stack, BLE radio, or management plane will never be remediated on that platform. For a device sitting on a public-facing outdoor edge, that is a permanent, growing exposure.
  • No TAC and no RMA. You cannot open a support case for an MR74 issue, and a unit that fails to a lightning strike, water ingress, or board failure cannot be replaced under warranty or contract. Outdoor APs see the harshest duty cycle of any AP class, so failure-without-replacement is a real operational risk, not a theoretical one.
  • Audit and compliance exposure. Running hardware past its supported life flags in security audits and frameworks that require vendor-supported, patchable infrastructure. For federal, DoD, SLED, and healthcare buyers, an unsupported AP on the network is a finding waiting to happen on the next assessment.

What each milestone date actually means

End of Sale - May 7, 2021

Cisco stopped selling new MR74-HW units through normal channels on this date. Any MR74 you buy now is new-old-stock or used/refurbished gear, and it carries a shrinking support runway behind it.

Last Day of Support (LDoS) - July 21, 2026

This is the date that governs your planning. It is the last day Cisco provides any engineering, security, or hardware support for the MR74. Software maintenance for this platform is effectively folded into the LDoS milestone, so there is no separate extended software-maintenance window to lean on. Treat July 21, 2026 as the date by which production MR74s should already be replaced and decommissioned, not the date you start the project.

Cisco maps the MR74 directly to the Meraki MR76 Wi-Fi 6 outdoor access point. It is a deliberate generational successor in the same form factor and power envelope, which is exactly what you want for an outdoor swap where physical access is expensive and crew time dominates the bill.

What is genuinely better

  • Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) instead of 802.11ac Wave 2. This is the headline. OFDMA lets the MR76 pack multiple clients into a single transmission by subdividing channels, which collapses airtime overhead in dense outdoor crowds, the exact scenario where MR74s struggled at stadiums and transit hubs.
  • Uplink and downlink MU-MIMO. The MR74 supported only downlink MU-MIMO; the MR76 adds uplink MU-MIMO (2x2:2 UL/DL), so client-to-AP traffic from IoT sensors, cameras, and handhelds is far more efficient.
  • Higher aggregate throughput. The MR76 delivers up to 1.7 Gbps aggregate (up to 1,201 Mbps on 5 GHz, 286 Mbps on 2.4 GHz) versus 1.3 Gbps on the MR74. Both are 2x2:2 radios, so per-client gains come from 802.11ax efficiency, not raw spatial-stream count.
  • Dedicated scanning radio. The MR76 retains a dedicated third radio for real-time WIDS/WIPS and automated RF optimization, plus a fourth BLE radio for beaconing and scanning, the same four-radio philosophy as the MR74 but tuned for the ax generation.
  • Same power, same uplink, same antennas. The MR76 runs on 802.3af PoE (about 15W max) over a single 1 GbE RJ45 uplink, identical to the MR74, and uses the same Meraki dual-band omni, sector, and patch antennas with N-type connectors. Same IP67 rating and -40C to 55C (-40F to 131F) operating range. That parity is what makes this a low-risk refresh.

A practical migration plan

1. Assessment and inventory

Pull a list of every MR74 serial, network, and physical location from the Meraki dashboard; the Organization-wide AP inventory makes this trivial. Note antenna type per AP, mounting method, PoE source (switch port versus injector), and cable-run condition. Flag any APs in hard-to-reach spots such as towers, roofs, or light poles, because those drive your labor cost and lift or crane scheduling far more than the hardware itself.

2. License transition

Confirm your co-termination date and current Enterprise or Advanced license tier. Order MR76 licenses to match the new AP count and align them to your co-term date so you do not create a billing mismatch. Have your partner reconcile any remaining MR74 license term so it is credited or co-termed rather than wasted.

3. Config and feature parity

Because both APs live in the same dashboard, SSIDs, group policies, RF profiles, and firewall and traffic-shaping rules carry over at the network level; you are not rebuilding config per device. Review RF profiles to enable Wi-Fi 6 features such as OFDMA and target wake time that the MR74 could not use, and verify any per-AP tags or location-analytics settings get reapplied to the new serials.

Validate that existing 802.3af PoE ports and outdoor cabling are healthy, then reuse them. Inspect and reuse antennas where condition allows; the N-type connector compatibility is the big labor saver here. If a cable run or surge arrestor is marginal, replace it during the swap while you already have crew on site.

5. Phased cutover

Migrate by zone or coverage cell rather than all at once. Add MR76s to the network, confirm they pull config and pass a brief on-air validation (client association, throughput, roaming between new and remaining old APs), then retire the matching MR74s. A short predictive or walk-test survey per zone confirms the existing placement still meets capacity before you remove the old units.

6. Secure decommission

Remove retired MR74s from the dashboard, release their licenses appropriately, and physically recover the hardware. For federal, DoD, and healthcare environments, follow your data-handling policy for device disposal and keep an asset disposition record for audit. Do not leave dead MR74s mounted and dark on the network edge.

Procurement notes for regulated buyers

For US federal, DoD, and SLED purchases, confirm TAA compliance and that units are sourced through an authorized Cisco and Meraki channel; genuine MR76-HW with valid, transferable licensing matters for both warranty and audit. GPC and credit-card thresholds and current lead times should be confirmed at quote time, since outdoor APs and their antennas can carry longer lead times than indoor models.
