How do I find a Cisco serial number in the CLI?

Step 1: Connect and run show version

On most IOS and IOS XE platforms, show version prints a "Processor board ID" or chassis serial near the bottom of the output, along with the model number and software version. This is usually the fastest single command for a standalone router or fixed-configuration switch.

Step 2: Run show inventory for a complete UDI

show inventory returns the Unique Device Identifier (UDI) for the chassis and every field-replaceable module — power supplies, line cards, fan trays — each with its own PID, VID (version ID), and SN. On modular chassis (Catalyst 9400, Nexus 9500, ASR 1000) this is the only command that surfaces serials for individual line cards and supervisors, not just the chassis itself.

Step 3: Use platform-specific commands when show version comes up short

Some platforms need a different command. NX-OS switches respond best to show inventory or show version.
